Management and Control of Nuisance Birds
Nuisance Birds are generally on a site because it provides the resources that they need, somewhere to nest, food or water.
Hawk Flying
Hawk flying for nuisance bird control is a non-lethal deterrent programme, a natural and effective measure, where the aim is not to kill the target species but to deter them from the area. The public is supportive of hawk flying for bird control, and our clients benefit from positive public relations by dealing with the problems caused by nuisance birds in a humane and responsible way.
With a large flock of fully-trained birds of prey, including both hawks and falcons, we can select the predatory species that is the most effective in dealing with the target species at your site.
Unlike other bird scaring devices, nuisance birds never become habituated to the presence of a live bird of prey.
Bird Proofing
The most effective way to deal with nuisance birds on a building or in an area is to install a proofing system that effectively excludes the target species. Installing anti-bird nets, or anti-bird spikes will prevent nuisance birds from being able to nest, perch or roost on the structure.
The proofing solution installed may be complex and require several systems to achieve the best possible overall effect. Acting as your trusted partner, our surveyors are free to select any products or systems on the market, from any manufacturer, to achieve the desired effect as well as commissioning bespoke manufactured systems. We select the most suitable systems from the entire range available. All installations are completed by our own fully trained staff utilising the services of specialists where required.
Scaring Systems
Scaring systems, whether that is an audio or visual scaring system can be a useful part of a programme to deter nuisance birds. Our specialist technicians will recommend the most appropriate system for your site. We also have hand-held systems available to hire, so you can try a system out before comitting to purchase.
Self Help Measures
The most important thing you can do to discourage nuisance birds is to remove access to nesting areas and food. Ensure that all bins are adequately covered and clean up any food spillages. Do not feed the birds, and ask everyone using your premises to refrain from feeding the birds.
Most birds, by their nature, will spend much of their time at height, on the top of the building. They come down to ground level mainly to feed, and can often beseen feeding in large flocks where food is available. Geese are the exception, and will usually be at ground level on grassy areas and near water.
Signs that you may have a bird problem include
- Seeing lots of birds on the roof
- Hearing birds from inside your property, especially hearing the cries of young birds wanting their parents to feed them
- Finding nesting materials around
- Damage to property or stock
- Blocked drains or gutters, especially if there are feathers and nesting materials
- Bird fouling / droppings at ground level
- Secondary infestations inside the property from bird mites, would indicate that nuisance birds, such as pigeons or starlings, are nesting on the structure of the buiding
